Being early feels like being behind.
Here’s the part no one tells you about being early in your career:
It feels exactly like you’re losing.
Last month, I spent time talking to peers with stories just like mine.
International students. Highly capable. Some even more qualified than me.
Still searching for jobs. Still waiting on internships. Still doing “everything right.”
I remember that phase clearly.
Back when I was applying, it wasn’t hard because I wasn’t working.
It was hard because everyone else’s wins were loud.
Offers being counted. Announcements being posted. Careers moving forward in public.
And even when you’re learning, growing, and showing up… it quietly turns into self-doubt.
Here’s what I wish someone told me then:
Being early looks exactly like being behind.
What “early” actually feels like
- More effort than reward.
- More reps than results.
- More silence than celebration.
You don’t post foundations. You post buildings.
Compounding is invisible at the beginning.
Obvious at the end.
